DID YOU KNOW….who will protect us….?

FACT: There is a proposal to remove the fire truck from Singer Island. Councilman Cedrick Thomas said that there was a “soft proposal” to reduce the staffing from 17 to 15 firemen who serve Singer Island, which would result in about 9 days a month there would be two fewer firemen here. He indicated that the fire truck may or may not be on the island.

I contacted the fire department for further clarification. I was advised that due to the City’s budget shortfall, the aforementioned plan is an alternate plan to reduce the expense of overtime, vacations and sick leave instead of terminating 2 employees.

Since the firefighters are cross-trained; when you remove a fireman you are also removing a paramedic and vice-versa.

Station # 3, (Singer Island) was built in the 1970s. If the City Council then felt there was such a need to add a fire truck, paramedics and fire house, it doesn’t make sense that with the addition of all the new high rise condominiums, hotels and private homes, not to mention influx of tourists visiting the beach and the new Ocean Mall and services provided to Palm Beach Shores, that you would reduce staffing by almost 30% from this location.

With approximately 900 fire/paramedic calls made from Singer Island each year, or between 2 and 3 a day, a quick response may mean the difference between life and death!

This matter will be discussed on Monday, August 22, at 6:00 or 6:30pm. I was unable to find the exact time on the website.

I urge everyone contact: City Council offices (561) 845-4095, attend the meeting or e-mail your comments to

MESSAGE FROM DAWN PARDO, Our Island Represenative....

Dear District 4 Residents,
I hope this note finds you well and enjoying the Summer of 2011!  I’d like to give you a brief update on what’s been happening around the city.

Coastal ErosionAs many of you know, the County Commission has asked their Staff to look for an alternative to the proposed breakwaters for the beach along the north end of Singer Island.  County staff and their consultants are hard at work looking at several options.  I recently had a discussion with Commissioner Marcus and Dan Bates from ERM.  I asked where do we go from here?  The next step will be to revisit earlier modeling of two groin configuration schemes, specifically looking at a low profile piling form to minimize turtle impact.  The model will predict an average renourishment schedule for use in developing a long term budget.  The County has not received a firm schedule from the consultant as of yet as to when we will have the model results, but they have started to look into unit costs for various methods of construction.  We will begin receiving updates from County staff every two weeks.  I shall keep you informed.

A1A ProjectThe A1A project is progressing beautifully.  New rails and lights have been installed on the little bridge along with a new median landscaped with Palm Trees and bougainvillea shrubs.  Progress is being made on the bridge and west Blue Heron Blvd.  On A1A, new lights have been installed along the path north of Pine Point Road, and the sidewalks are close to completion.  There is still a lot of work to complete but the good news is the project is on schedule.  I was informed a few days ago that FDOT will not allow us to draw lines on the road from the west side of A1A to the beach paths on the east side of A1A.  Instead we will have stamped concrete pavers which will guide walkers along the west side of A1A to all public beach paths.

Riviera Beach Marina – South DistrictThe Riviera Beach Marina redevelopment is underway!  Last week we had a ground breaking ceremony.  The north-end of the marina is now under construction.  We are replacing and reconfiguring the docks and replacing the seawall, adding new electrical and sewer lines and installing boats lifts on the south-end.  When the north-end is complete in several months, we will begin the south-end.   I recently attended a Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND) meeting with our marina consultant and we submitted a grant application for $1,500,000 to assist with the marina development.  The reception from the District Commissioners was excellent and we anticipate receiving the full grant.  In total, Riviera Beach has received grants in excess of $10,000,000 which has allowed us to rebuild the marina instead of putting a band aid on the docks and seawall. We are asking Singer Island to come out and give us input on the upland Marina development on Monday, July 25 @ 6:00 pm at the Hilton Hotel on Singer Island.  Your thoughts and opinion are very important.   I hope to see many of our year round residents in attendance.

Marina District NorthWe anticipate Rybovich coming before the City Council in late August with their plan to develop their property on 20th-21st from Broadway to the Intracoastal.  They are proposing building a mega yacht service center catering to super yachts in excess of 250 feet.  This project will have a great positive economic impact on our city and Palm Beach County.   There have been several businesses from other counties coming into our city looking for property to expand their marine businesses.  New Port Cove has also expressed an interest in expanding their facility in the future.   The CRA has approved funds and hired an architect to improve the neighborhood south of Blue Heron Blvd so the marine business expansion will transition seamlessly and without any negative impact on the quaint neighborhood just to its north.

Riviera HeightsThe CRA has designated funds to make substantial improvements in the Riviera Beach Heights neighborhood.  Riviera Heights is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods.  Several neighborhood charettes have taken place and the time has finally come to start implementing the vision.  The residents are very excited to say the least.

New BusinessYour Council and Staff have been actively courting businesses in an attempt to get them to relocate to our city.  The City certainly can use the additional tax revenue to make needed capital improvements throughout Riviera Beach and to lower taxes.  We have several very good prospects.  Stay tuned…

BudgetThe City of Riviera Beach has held several budget hearings.  This year, we are all in agreement that taxes will not be raised.  I can’t say the same for the County or the School Board, however.  More to come on this issue.   Again, I hope you are enjoying the summer and staying cool.  Rest assured my colleagues and I are working hard to make Riviera Beach the best city in South Florida.   Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you. Dawn Pardo
